We meet on a crisp late summer day in the heart of Stockholm to discuss one of Rolex’s most iconic models – the Daytona ref. 116500LN. With its rich racing heritage and timeless design, the Daytona has become a cornerstone in TimepieceSwede’s collection and an essential topic in our conversation.
What can you tell Bezl’s readers about the historical significance of the Rolex Daytona and its connection to motorsport?
The Daytona model was launched in 1963, a year after Rolex became the official timekeeper of the 24 Hours of Daytona race. Initially, the model was called simply the Cosmograph, but a few years later, the first versions featuring “Daytona” on the dial were introduced. Since its inception, the Rolex Daytona has been a significant watch in both the world of motorsport and among watch enthusiasts.

White dial meets black ceramic bezel – the striking contrast that makes the Rolex Daytona 116500LN stand out.
The Daytona comes in various dial colors and materials. What is it about the white dial on the 116500LN that makes it so special to you?
I have to say that both the white and black dials look great on this model. For me, the choice was simple because the white dial stands out more in my collection, and I think many others feel the same way. Many watches have black dials, so the white one really breaks the mold in a stylish way. Plus, it’s a well-balanced and beautiful dial.
What is it about the white dial on the 116500LN that makes it so sought after by collectors and watch enthusiasts?
I think it’s for the same reason as me – the white dial stands out among the more common black or blue dials, and it’s a very clean and elegant look. The more practical answer is that demand is high due to its strong resale value.
In this article, we’re focusing on the 116500LN reference, but how has the Daytona’s design evolved since its introduction in the 1960s?
There have been many changes over the years, both in terms of design and the movements. If we focus on the external design, changes have been made to the case, bezel, pushers, etc. However, Rolex has maintained a consistent design language since the beginning. Today, the Daytona is slightly larger and has a ceramic bezel.

Crafted for comfort and durability – the Rolex Oysterbracelet perfectly complements the Daytona 116500LN.
What has given the Rolex Daytona its iconic status in the watch world?
I think it’s a combination of factors: the design, the connection to motorsport, and the history of Paul Newman’s Daytona, which has definitely contributed a lot. I also think it’s partly due to the fact that it’s been quite difficult to buy from authorized dealers for many years.
You’ve owned this watch for a while now and have gotten to know it well. How is it to wear?
In my opinion, it’s absolutely wonderful to wear and sits very comfortably on the wrist. I prefer when a watch doesn’t feel too heavy or noticeable, and Rolex has really nailed that with the 116500. Plus, it’s a joy to look at every time you check the time – beautiful from every angle!
The Daytona 116500LN comes with both white and black dials. What are your thoughts on the aesthetic differences, and which do you think appeals to different types of buyers?
Both are fantastic, so whichever you choose, you’ll be very happy. The white dial really “pops” with the bright face and contrasting black subdials and text, while the black dial is a bit more understated. I think it simply comes down to personal taste – whether you prefer lighter or darker dials.
Whether dressed up or down, the Rolex Daytona 116500LN complements any style with effortless sophistication.
From the racetrack to the wrist – the Rolex Daytona 116500LN embodies the spirit of motorsport.
If someone is buying their first Daytona, what should they consider?
I’d recommend starting by exploring the different references to find a favorite. Some might prefer an older Zenith Daytona over the current models, and in that case, there are other factors to consider compared to buying a new one from an authorized dealer. The key is to do thorough research and find a great example that suits your style and needs.
What do you think the future holds for the Rolex Daytona 116500LN in the watch world, considering its current popularity and status?
It’s hard to say, but I believe that the interest and demand will continue. The successor, the 126500LN, is also a fantastic watch, but I personally prefer the 116500LN, and I think many others feel the same way.
Thank you, TimepeiceSwede, for your time and for sharing your expertise on this model.

Lastly
The Rolex Daytona 116500LN is an icon in Rolex’s catalog and has long been one of the most sought-after models in the world, if not the most sought-after. Its combination of racing heritage and timeless design makes it a natural choice for many watch enthusiasts. Although I have owned this particular reference with the white dial—the same one TimepieceSwede wears in this article—I ultimately decided to sell it. The stark contrast between the white dial and the black ceramic bezel was too bold for my taste. Looking back, I realize that I got caught up in the hype surrounding the white 116500LN and chose it based on that. Deep down, though, the black dial was likely the right choice for me.
If I were to buy a Daytona today, I would choose the black dial, which offers a softer and more harmonious aesthetic, in my opinion.
However, beyond these aesthetic preferences, the Daytona is an absolute pleasure to wear. With its elegant profile, it sits perfectly on my 17 cm wrist. It balances sportiness and elegance in a way that few other watches can. This is a model that can be effortlessly worn with a formal suit or dressed down with a t-shirt and jeans. The Rolex Daytona is a watch that deserves a place in every serious collection.
